All About Acid Peels

What is the deal with acid peels?

Amy Midkiff

Acid peels are very popular, but it is often confusing to try to figure out whether to go with alpha hydroxy, beta hydroxy or poly hydroxy acid. Check out Vox's great explainer and our included table on acid peels below.

 Acid Name Examples Uses
Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) Glycolic & Lactic acids Exfoliates surface of skin, removing dead skin cells and reduces acne scars, fine lines and dark spots.
Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA)
Salycilic Acid Goes beneath skin's surface to clean out excess oil and reduces inflammation. Good for acne.
Polyhydroxy Acid (PHA)
Gentler acids used for exfoliation. Attracts water molecules, boosting hydration.
